In refusing to accept a gag order instead of a death sentence, Socrates famously stated that “the unexamined life is not worth living”. We may not face a similar choice, in which case that statement may seem extreme, if not elitist. However, as the philosopher Robert Nozick put, the examined life is at least one’s own.
